San Jose is the third most populated city in California and the tenth most populated in the United States.  San Jose was founded on November 29, 1777 by the Spanish.  Originally San Jose served as a farming community for the Spanish troops in San Francisco and Monterey.  In 1850 California gained its statehood and San Jose served as the first state capital.
San Jose, in the mid-20th century, went from being a farming town to a growing urban center.  Many veterans returning from WWII landed in San Jose, creating a growth in population.   With an influx of creativity, the city quickly accelerated from an agricultural center to a metropolitan area.
By the 1990s the city was known as the high tech capital of the world and earned the nickname Silicon Valley.  San Jose is the home of many high tech companies with a competitive job force.  This has driven up the cost of housing in San Jose.
